The CWCR addresses regional and global conservation issues through education and research.  Member institutions and individuals have their own mission-specific goals, which the CWCR supports through development of cooperative win-win relationships.

Collaboration is critical to ecosystem management approaches.  Scientists with different areas of expertise need to work together with local residents and communities to solve conservation problems, and for such cooperative efforts to be successful, human relationships need to be built.  These relationships create a shared sense of ownership of the problem, and can improve the chances that decisions are implemented.

The CWCR fosters such relationships by sponsoring annual conferences and special workshops of interest to members. We help coordinate collaborative endeavors among member institutions and individuals to bring together and expand resources, technical expertise, and laboratory facilities.  Cooperative educational programs provide hands-on learning experiences for students interested in wildlife medicine and research, and create team-oriented approaches to solving medical problems.  Funding limitations demand that wildlife research projects utilize resources efficiently, and the CWCR facilitates these efforts.  Future plans include establishment of a competitive grants and fellowships program, and development of an inter-institutional, multi-disciplinary graduate training program in conservation medicine.
